Maratika Chimey Takten Choling School

Maratika school was established in 1999 by the Nawang Jigdral Chokyi Wangchuk Rinpoche on the auspicious day of the Lord Buddha's first sermon at Deer Park on the Four Noble Truths. The school is now in its fourth year of operation. It is home to monks who come from some of the poorest and most remote villages in Nepal, and India.  They range in age from 12 to 35.

At the Maratika Chimey Takten Choling school instructions are offered in areas of Buddhist philosophy and education based on the three traditions of Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana philosophy, literature, history, ritual prayers, practice and meditations.

After completing the school's nine year course of study,  the student may then receive either a graduate or post graduate degree. Students have the option of continuing their studies in a three year research program or three years meditation retreat. After completing the nine years course and three years research or three years meditation retreat, the student receives a masters degree in Buddhist philosophy.

Because of the increasing number of students, lack of space has become a major problem. Our dormitory rooms are fully occupied, and the two makeshift classrooms in the building are sufficient for only about 15 students. Students of vastly different abilities study in the same classroom. While many more students want to study at Maratika Chimey Takten Choling School, the size of the school building prevents us from increasing our enrollment.
