Venerable Ngawang Jigdral Chokyi Wangchuk or Lopon Karma Wangchuk was recognized by His Holiness Trulshik Rinpoche as the Lineage holder Rinpoche of Maratika monastery.
He was born in 1971 as the son of Ngawang Chophel Gyatso Rinpoche and Tinsalma in the hidden valley of the Padmasambhava in Solukhumbu Eastern Nepal. From the young age he began his studies with his father at Kulung monastery and learned the initial Tibetan writing, reading, recitation, ritual and basic prayers.
In 1980 he followed with his father to Maratika and continued to study under the direction of his father. .After that under the guidance of H.H. Trulshik Rinpoche. at Thupten Choling monastery in Solukhumbu he received the complete basic training in Nyingmapa Tradition. He also received instruction from Shechen monastery in Kathmandu for two years.
In 1986 he went for further studies in Sikkim for higher Buddhist Studies and later received the Master Degree (The Master Degree of the Buddha's Teachings in the Sutra Tradition) and has been honored with the Title name of Khenpo.
After returning from Sikkim, under the guidance of His Holiness.Trulshik Rinpoche he entered solitary retreat in Himalayas at Thupten Choling monastery, Singyephug, Maratika, Pharphing, Khadrosangphug and Bodhgaya. During that time his father passed into Parinirvana.
His Holiness Trulshik Rinpoche then recommended he return to Maratika to fulfill his father’s activities.
In 1998 His Holiness Trulshik Rinpoche enthroned him as the Lineage holder Rinpoche of Maratika monastery, and awarded him the Degree of Vajra Master (Dorje Lopon Rinpoche) At that time he was honored with the Title name of Ngawang Jigtral Chokyi Wangchuk Rinpoche.
His Holiness Trulshik Rinpoche also authorized him to give Empowerments, Transmissions and Commentaries. He also composed a long life prayer for him as a blessing.
He received the complete Dzogchen Teachings from the lineage of his root guru H.H. Trulshik Rinpoche, including Guyang Nyingthig, Yangti Chedron, Khading Shoglab, Choyingdzod, and Yeshe Lama.during his regular visit to Maratika.

In addition he received the whole empowerments of Nyingma Kama, Dhamngag Dzod, Dudjom Tersar, Doejod Pumzang, from H.H. Trulshik Rinpoche. He also received the transmission of Nyingma Kama and Dhamnga Dzod from Kyabje Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche.
From His Holiness the Dalai Lama he received the Thirty-seven Bodhisattva Practices, Eight Verses on mind Training, Middle Stages of Meditation, Refuge and Boddhicitta vows.

From His Holiness Penor Rinpoche he received the whole empowerments of Rinchen Terdzod (Treasury of hidden Treasure Teachings) and its Transmission from Kyabje Shechen
Rabjam Rinpoche.
He further received the complete empowerments and Transmission of Kagyu Ngagdzod, and Kalachakra from H.E. Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche.
From His Holiness Sakaya Trizin Rinpoche he received the complete empowerments of Drubthab Kundu and it's Transmission from Kyabje Loding Khen Rinpoche.

Besides that he received many other teachings from his father Lama Ngawang Chophel Gyatso Rinpoche.
He has traveled and taught extensively throughout in USA, Canada, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Presently he is residing in Maratika where he regularly gives teachings at Chimey Takten Choling monastery and is working on the development of Maratika. |
